Himachal Pradesh limps back to normalcy

SHIMLA: Five days after a heavy snowfall buried towns of Himachal Pradesh and cut off many places from the outside world, the situation is returning to normal.

Power supply has been restored at many places and layers of snow have been cleared from the streets of towns including Manali and Shimla. Most of the urban areas have been re-connected via road but the situation in the interiors of the state is still grim.

The Kullu-Manali highway became operational on Tuesday restoring the road link to Manali much to the relief of tourists who were forced to walk 20 km to reach the town.

The roads within Manali town are still covered under snow. The power supply has been restored but partially. Frozen ice on the roads has led to dozens of minor accidents.

In Shimla, power and water supply has been completely restored. But roads in upper Shimla areas are still blocked.

Kinnaur, Lahaul-Spiti and Pangi-Bharmaur regions of Chamba district, Bara Bhangal area of Kangra district and Seraj, Karsog and Chauhar valleys of Mandi district are yet to return to normalcy with power supply yet to be restored and roads still blocked.

Lahaul-Spiti and Kinnaur districts, which received 3 to 10 feet of snow, continue to be the most inaccessible. Dozens of people are still stranded between Rampur and Kinnaur with many in need medical attention but blocked roads and fear of avalanches are not letting people move. Seven people have been killed in the snow related incidents.

According to Shimla meteorological centre, Himachal Pradesh would witness dry weather conditions till January 26 but higher reaches of Lahaul-Spiti district would get rain and snow on Wednesday. Keylong town of Lahaul-Spiti is freezing with minimum temperature of minus 16.9 degrees celsius while maximum temperature was minus 3.6 degrees celsius on Tuesday.
